Description
This is a 1795 FLOWING HAIR SILVER DOLLAR, NGC VF-25, CAC-WHOLESOME W/ GORGEOUS RIM TONING. This example is the “3 Leaves” variety, and more specifically a Bolender-5 (B-5). The B-5 is one of the easiest of all early dollars to attribute, due to its prominent raised die line at 9:00 in the obverse field. Although there is a misconception that the “2 Leaves” variety is the scarcer of the two major design variants, this is not totally accurate. In actuality, if all of the Bolender varieties of each design were combined, they are of almost equal rarity. Perhaps the fact that the B-5 is one of the most common early dollars, has lead the 3 leaves variant as a whole to be viewed as more common. Ironically, the second most common Flowing Hair Dollar is the B-1, or a 2 leaves variant. “Common” is also a relative measure. No early dollar is common with the technical and aesthetic merits of the present specimen. Original dove grey central devises give way to beautiful cobalt blue, sunset orange and yellow-gold peripheries. This one must have spent much of its life in either a Wayte Raymond album or on a vintage coin board. There are none of the usual planchet irregularities, adjustment marks, striking anomalies or other visual deterrents which tend to plague Flowing Hair Dollars. VF-25 population stands at 264 combined PCGS/NGC examples, of which only 21 have garnered CAC stickers. None could possibly match the eye appeal of this piece. Type collectors will have to battle this one out, as once it’s gone, it’s gone. Yes, this coin is not cheap, but quality like this seldom is.
