Description
This is a 1804 DRAPED BUST QUARTER – PCGS MS-63+ CAC, SIMPLY STUNNING & LEGENDARY KEY-DATE!
This is a condition census example of a classic United States numismatic rarity and represents the first Draped Bust, Heraldic Eagle quarter. The U.S. Mint struck a scant 6,738 1804 dated quarters following the initial quarter production of 1796. Although the 1796 Quarter, as a brand-new U.S. type coin, was saved in some quantity, very, very few 1804 Bust Quarters were saved upon their initial release. In fact, according to estimates, fewer than 400 1804 Quarters survive in any grade, with just 6 total in Mint State. Most 1804s are G-VG and even Very Fine and better specimens are extremely tough! According to Q. David Bowers, “I have had dozens of Choice and Gem Mint State 1796 Quarters, but the number of high-grade 1804 Quarters I have handled or offered at auction can be counted on the fingers of one hand….with some fingers left over.”
The present example is the sole PCGS MS-63+ and carries an all-important CAC sticker. Although the census shows 3 PCGS MS-64s and an NGC MS-65, the Steve Tompkins reference Early United States Quarters: 1796-1838 ranks this example tied for Condition Census #2. The CAC population shows only this coin and one other 63 CAC, along with a lone 64 CAC and nothing finer.
Seemingly fully struck and richly toned, the present specimen exhibits blue and gold coloration over reflective semi-prooflike surfaces that create a simply stunning iridescent glow. The coin has crisp, sharp rims and is remarkably free of major contact marks or abrasions. Some light adjustment marks help to pedigree the coin, commonplace on early silver and gold and evidence of a young United States Mint still attempting to fine tune their coin planchet weights.
This fine example has provenance to the Richard Jewell Collection, where is last sold publicly in the August 2011 ANA Stacks Auction for $184,000, then as a PCGS MS-63. Given the rapid price appreciation in most areas of the rare coin market, this classic key-date rarity seems an outstanding value at present and a coin destined for solid and steady future price appreciation. We offer this blue- chip stock for the advanced collector or investor seeking a cornerstone for their collection/portfolio.
