This is a 1836 GOBRECHT $1, J-60, NAME ON BASE, PCGS PR-55, CAC, PQ & PROBABLY UNDERGRADED. This is die alignment 1, meaning that the obverse head of Miss Liberty is aligned with the DO of DOLLAR on the reverse. The different die alignments (of which 4 are catalogued) resulted from multiple attempts to correct a defective feeder mechanism by rotating the reverse die, an experiment which largely failed. Specific details as to the exact dates Gobrecht Dollars were minted are somewhat muddled. It is believed that the J-60 dies were probably prepared in December of 1836 and struck sometime later. These coins weighed 416 grains, mirroring the standard enacted in 1792. All have a plain edge, although a single specimen believed to have been struck later, is known with a reeded edge. One thousand of these coins were struck for circulation, and although considered proof coins, a number did enter commerce. Today, Gobrecht Dollars remain one of the most popular United States type coins. Although technically a pattern, Gobrecht Dollars are collected in the mainstream of American numismatics, keeping intense price pressure on this short-lived series. The present specimen has incredible eye appeal, with a medium-grey patina, and a deeper steel-blue framing the reverse periphery. Many Gobrecht Dollars were carried as keepsake pocket-pieces, resulting in excessive wear and contact marks. Frequently, such pieces were also cleaned. This piece is pleasantly void of all of these commonly found defects. As is the case with most, the strike is both sharp and well defined. Underlying luster is vibrant with a fair degree of reflectivity remaining in the fields. Only 4 pieces at this grade level have garnered the elusive CAC sticker. As the only sub $20K, straight-graded Gobrecht Dollar represented here on eBay, we don’t anticipate this one will last very long. In short, this is one great coin, and an even better value. Our commitment is to provide you with quality coins and collectibles at the best possible prices. This piece is no exception.
