Description
This is a 1847 PROOF GREAT BRITAIN GOTHIC CROWN, UN DECIMO ON EDGE, KM744 – NGC PF-62 FRESH, RARE!. A British rarity form the early reign of Queen Victoria. A mere 8,000 Crowns were struck in a Proof finish, with most carried as pocket pieces and worn down, or simply melted and lost to time. The Gothic style lettering of the mid 19th century and overall ornate design makes this piece stand out among other British Crowns. Designed by William Wyon, who Queen Victoria sat for on multiple occasions, this unique style Crown has been sought-after by British and world collectors as a “key coin” for over a century.
This specific specimen is fresh from a Midwestern collection where it sat uncertified for decades. The surfaces are vibrant and reflective in a prooflike manner. Golden-red coloration that transitions to blue peripheries makes this very attractive for the assigned grade. Only some very light obverse handling lines limit the grade, and we feel NGC was very conservative on this one, as it holds a choice or finer appearance in our opinion. There are no major mark or distractions, making this piece a wonderful addition to any advanced European collection, or just a unique “put-away” coin. The few recent auction appearances seem to show these approaching $20,000. Opportunity knocks!
