Description
This is a 1856 PROOF FLYING EAGLE CENT NGC PF-65* EAGLE EYE CERT, S-5, FIERY PROOF SURFACES, POP 1 in 65*. An amazing specimen and one of the prettiest 1856 Flyers we have ever owned. The S-5 was not discovered until the early 1990s, and it is believed that about 35 or fewer examples of the S-5 exist at all grades. Originally graded as Mint States by PCGS upon discovery, the S-5 1856 Flyers are now believed to have been the first 1856 Cents struck. Special care was obviously taken, as these are extremely well-struck with flashy, attractive surfaces, a centering dot, and the die striations often found on specially prepared pattern coins of the era. This specific coin is the only 65 grade 1856 Flying Eagle Cent that NGC has designated with a star. The eye appeal is amazing, with fiery red and reflective proof surfaces, a tremendous strike and virtually nothing in the way of spots or abrasions. A mint-made die flake is noted at 7 o’clock on the obverse and may have been the only thing keeping this out of a PF-66 or better holder. It has also been given an Eagle Eye Sticker from Rick Snow for it’s outstanding quality. A tremendous coin and a tremendous opportunity! Our commitment is to provide you with quality coins and collectibles at the best possible prices. This piece is no exception.
