Description
This is a 1859-O LIBERTY SEATED QUARTER NGC MS-64, FATTIE HOLDER, PQ & FRESH TO THE MARKET. Possibly the most interesting coin from the recent Whitman Baltimore show. This walked up to our table from one of our regular customers. The coin had been put away for years and had not been “shopped around”, so we jumped on it. With a mintage of just 260,000 coins, the 1859-O Quarter is the lowest mintage of the 1853-1860 issues. It also has the 4th lowest mintage of the entire New Orleans Seated Quarter series. It is estimated that only about 350 examples survived in all states of preservation, with only about 20 Mint States in existence. The present specimen, housed in an ancient “no barcode” NGC Fattie holder, is one of just 5 MS-64s at NGC with just 2 at PCGS. The population report shows just 4 total 65s, 1 66 and 2 67s at both services combined, some of which are certainly resubmissions of the same coins, thus overestimating the population.
This piece displays vibrant toning overlaying satiny cartwheel luster. Yellows, oranges and reds transition to green and blues at the peripheral right. The reverse displays a orange gold upper central area that transitions to a royal blue hue. The surfaces are arguably gem quality with only a few minor ticks to be found. The strike is full and the high points are crisp and absent any “cabinet friction.”
There have been no sales on any MS-64 since 2014, and no NGC MS-64 has sold since 2007! Price guides value the coin from 10,000-13,000, but with the absense of any sales, and the presentation of this coin, anything is just an educated guess. An outstanding expert for the Seated collector, or the advanced collector putting away tremendous value! NOTE: As this coin was just brought up to us at Baltimore in a very private deal, we can assure you this has never been tried for PCGS Crossover or for CAC stickering.
