Description
This is a 1870 $20 LIBERTY HEAD GOLD – PCGS MS-61 CAC, RARE DATE, FLASHY FROSTY REAL BU!. A rare date $20 Liberty with an original mintage of 155,150 and an estimated survival of around 1,100 pieces in all grade. This date has always been seen as tough, with Akers considering it rare in AU and above. The groups of European $20s over the past decade have done very little to the population of 1870 Philadelphia $20s, as there were apparently very few of them in Europe. The MS-61 population is just 37 coins at PCGS with only 8 CACs. There are only 26 coins graded higher and only 5 higher CAC examples, both scant figures by $20 populations.
The present coin is lustrous, semi-prooflike and fully uncirculated. The cheek as well as the reverse border on fully choice quality, with some marks in the fields perhaps limiting the grade….although we have seen far lesser quality coins graded MS-62. A rare coin and great value. We doubt this one will last!
