Description
This is a 1872 THREE CENT SILVER PCGS MS-65 CAC, FRESH & PRETTY, 1,000 MINTAGE, RARE!. An extremely rare post Civil War three cent silver date, with an original mintage of just 1,000 pieces. Unlike the lower mintage Seated Liberty denominations of the 1880s that were saved in some quantities by collectors, 1868 Three Cent Silvers were not saved heavily. Additionally, their small size and thin planchet makes them extremely fragile. PCGS estimates that just about 100 or so examples exist in ALL conditions, with fewer than 40 Mint States. This small group of Mint State survivors probably came from knowledgeable collectors of the day who realized that the 1872 mintage was tiny, and also knew that this was going to be the end of U.S. Mint production of business strike 3 cent silvers. The present example, conservatively graded MS-65 & CAC, has fresh semi-prooflike surfaces with orange, gold and neon underlying colors. The piece is well-struck , yet it exhibits the business strike die characteristics that identify this rare date. This 1872 has a population of just 2 at PCGS in MS-65, with just 6 coins numerically finer. Only 3 pieces graded 65 or 65+ at either service have been awarded a CAC sticker. One of the rarest coins we have bought in some time. Don’t miss out! Our commitment is to provide you with quality coins and collectibles at the best possible prices. This piece is no exception.
