Description
This is a 1895-O MORGAN DOLLAR – PCGS MS-60, OGH, FLASHY, WELL-STRUCK & PQ FOR THE DATE!. An unquestioned key-date in the Morgan Dollar series, especially in Mint State condition. Of an original mintage of just 450,000 coins, most 1895-O Morgans were stored and later melted by the United States. The 100,000 or so of the mintage that entered circulated saw heavy use and wear. Additionally, the workmanship by the New Orleans Mint employees during this point was quite shoddy at best. In efforts to produce as many coins as possible in a short period, the coiners disregarded quality control. As a result, most high grade 1895-O Morgans are very poorly struck with unattractive surfaces and deficient luster.
However, the present example is quite the exception! Housed in an old Green Label PCGS holder and one of only 23 coins ever graded at this level, this 1895-O is unusually well-struck for the date, with cartwheel luster on original white surfaces with just the faintest tough of champagne skin. Major marks and distractions are non-existent, with only very light scattered abrasions consistent with the grade (or even consistent with a higher grade coins). This is one of the more attractive 1895-O Morgans we can recall acquiring. Don’t miss this key-date Morgan!
