Description
This is a 1896 $5 SILVER CERTIFICATE EDUCATIONAL, FR-268, PMG AU-55 EPQ STAR, RARE TROPHY!! A stunning trophy note that was just freshly graded by PMG. This was brought to our table at Charlotte by the individual who graded it, and we couldn’t say YES quickly enough. In fact, there’s very few notes that I (Robbie) keep, and I almost decided to put this away…..but the conflict of business.
Arguably the most popular currency design in U.S. Paper Money, the $5 Silver Certificate is the key note of the 1896 U.S. Educational Series. The obverse depicts Liberty as a winged Goddess (a representation of Electricity) presenting light to the world, as a sign of the United States’ technological progress throughout the 19th century. She is standing on a map of the United States and holding a lightbulb, while flanked by Jupiter on the left (representing Energy) and Fame right next to her (representing Growth) and Peace on her right. The U.S. Capital dome is also depicted on the right side. The reverse features the portraits of Grand and Sheridan.
The note itself exhibits amazing freshness and quality to the paper. Bright, natural colors, crisp corners and boardwalk margins give this note the appearance of a Gem specimen. In fact, the note doesn’t have a centerfold, but a pair of very light folds on the thirds of the note. In our opinion, this note never actually circulated, but was saved at the time of issue and lightly folded and put away. Just a stunning example of this trophy type note that we do not expect to last!
