This is a 1857 PROOF HALF CENT PCGS PR-65 CAC, 266 MINTED, RARE, FRESH, PRETTY & PQ! From a scant original mintage of just 266 pieces, it is believed that most of these coins went unsold, with the balance either released or destroyed. The survival estimate according to CoinInfo.com is 40 pieces, classifying it as an R-8.7. The rarity aspect is obvious. What is less apparent is how visually unattractive these proof half cents can be. Finding an example with any degree of eye appeal is very challenging, to say the least. The present coin is original, wholesome and aesthetically, beautiful. The obverse is deep orange mellowed by some original chocolate-brown, while the reverse is adorned with cobalt blue peripheries and a fuschia center. Perhaps most importantly, this coin is fresh out of the woodwork with no prior appearances in the numismatic arena in recorded history. Unlike many of our competitors who source many or most of their coins from numismatic auctions, The Reeded Edge relies solely on collections, estates and word-of-mouth for our rare coin supply chain. This makes us a little bit different in the marketplace, but it also garners us a loyal following of collectors who desire fresh coins that haven’t been exposed to the market. Fresh back from PCGS (last week), this is truly a first-shot opportunity at a fresh rarity, which in our opinion, is also an incredible value. Once this piece finds a new home, it will likely disappear again for an extended period of time. Our commitment is to provide you with quality coins and collectibles at the best possible prices. This piece is no exception. Please note, the coin and collectibles markets do fluctuate, and prices occasionally will change. In this rare circumstance, we will contact you first to verify your order.
