Description
This is a 1859 $20 LIBERTY GOLD DOUBLE EAGLE – NGC XF-45, VERY RARE DATE! A low original mintage of just 43,597 pieces tells only part of the story for this rare Philadelphia Mint Type 1 No Motto 20. Almost unheard of in Uncirculated condition, David Akers considered this date one of his “pet dates” that he felt was far rarer than given due credit for. Of additional note is that this date was virtually unrepresented in the shipwreck hoards resulting in its relative rarity increasing in time compared to other Type 1 $20s.
The present specimen, housed in an older NGC XF-45 holder, has medium gold surfaces with deeper orange highlights. The details are consistent to strong for the grade, and the surfaces are smooth and free of major distractions. Considering this date quickly becomes $15,000 or more only a little nicer, this seems an excellent opportunity to own a pleasing, rare example at under $10,000. Opportunity knocks! Our commitment is to provide you with quality coins and collectibles at the best possible prices. This piece is no exception. Please note, the coin and collectibles markets do fluctuate, and prices occasionally will change. In this rare circumstance, we will contact you first to verify your order.
