Description
This is a 1861 SEATED LIBERTY DOLLAR – PCGS AU-58, RARE DATE! PL SURFACES & THE OBV IS AMAZING! With a mintage of just 77,500 pieces, the 1861 Seated Dollar is scarcer than any Morgan Dollar, including the heralded 1893-S. Rarity truly is is the order of the day. While Proofs are occasionally seen on the market, business strikes in all degrees are very elusive. The relative degree of business strikes of all Philadelphia Mint Liberty Seated dollars of the early 1860s is difficult to calculate. Proofs come on the market with regularity, as noted, but these are more visible than circulation strikes and tend to be included in auctions much more often than VF and EF coins.
The acquisition of a nice Very Fine, Extremely Fine, or AU 1861 dollar is an occasion for pride. Fortunately, catalogue valuations do not at all reflect the true rarity of such coins, especially in relation to later, more publicized, higher priced coins, such as the 1893-S Morgan Dollar. In a relative sense, this is a coin that’s grossly undervalued in today’s marketplace. For the collector trying to use conventional pricing indexes as a compass to acquire this date, it may prove to be a very long wait.
Here is an opportunity to acquire an elusive coin minted during the first year of the Civil War in the perfect collector grade. These do not come around very often, so as the old saying goes, strike now while the iron is hot!
