Description
This is a 1877 $5 LIBERTY GOLD HALF EAGLE – PCGS AU-58, RARE DATE! Always regarded as one of the true rarities of the $5 Liberty series, the 1877 appears less in auction than most of its contemporaries. With a mintage of just 1132 pieces, there are probably no more than 80 still existent. The present piece has lively, fresh luster with watery proof-like surfaces evident on both the obverse and reverse. It is limited in grade by numerous small marks in the fields, more so than wear. There are only 5 coins graded higher at PCGS, catapulting this example into the condition census. From a shear eye appeal standard, the present piece is hard to beat. David Akers opined, Next to the 1875, the 1877 has the lowest mintage of any Liberty Head Half Eagle from the Philadelphia Mint. Several strictly uncirculated examples are known (I have seen one beautiful proof-like gem) and most of the others are in the EF to AU range with only a few falling short of that level. As a date, the 1877 is similar in overall rarity to the 1869, 1870, 1871, 1874 and 1876 and more rare than the 1866-1868 dates and the 1872.
