Sometimes, you are offered a coin and you just “have” to buy it. This coin spoke to us for many reasons. Firstly, with an original mintage of just 4,000 specimens and only about 500 survivors, this is extremely scarce! Secondly, this example is solidly in the condition census, as a PCGS Population 7 with just 3 finer and none finer at CAC. Thirdly, these appear very infrequently, with the last PCGS auction appearance being 6 years ago. But, most importantly, the quality of this coins is “off the charts!” Rich, fully-struck and lustrous gold surfaces, a frosted cheek and mirrored fields that provide a cameo prooflike appearance and the lack of major distractions make this one premium in ALL regards. To explain the quality in market terms, this exact coin last saw the market in a 2004 Heritage auction in this exact same holder (less the CAC sticker). In a period where an ordinary example of this date would have arguably sold for 2-3K, this piece realized $5,400…..in 2004! Same coin, same amazing quality, CAC sticker and an untouched fresh holder 22 years later.
