Description
Today, we will start offering a collection of Jetons that we just got back from PCGS. These Jetons (pronounced jay-tawn) are fascinating numismatic artifacts with an interesting, if not somewhat clouded, history. Jetons or counters were used as calculation instruments in Europe in the middle ages. By the 16th century, Jetons were mostly used to propagate political messages, and to glorify the deeds of the sitting ruler. There was such a great need to make propaganda through Jetons, that they continued to be struck long after they ceased to be used as counters. In 1920, English numismatist F.P. Barnard tried to date the earliest Jetons which he was able to trace back to 1190. By the 16th century, Jetons were collector items in France and the Netherlands. But not until the 19th century were the first signs of interest of the Jeton as a calculation instrument perceived in France. Nonetheless, in 1876 the Belgian numismatist Dugniolle wrote in the introduction of his comprehensive catalog of All Jetons of the Low Country that he did not believe that Jetons had been used for calculating in the old days. Perhaps these conflicting opinions have spurred collector interest in modern times, and especially so in the last 10 years when Jetons have done a collecting renaissance. Many articles had been published during this period sheading additional light on this area of fascinating numismatic exonumia. This is a FRANCE JETON 1860-79 NOTAIRES DE NEUFCHATEL ABEILLE 29mm SILVER, PCGS MS-61. Our commitment is to provide you with quality coins and collectibles at the best possible prices.
