This is a 1652 PINE TREE SHILLING LARGE PLANCHET PELLETS – PCGS XF-45! An attractive example of this extremely important U.S. Colonial issue. The first coins struck on mainland America, they were struck by the Massachusetts Bay Colony in Boston by local silversmiths John Hull and Robert Sanderson. These silver coins helped to alleviate a shortage of coinage in the new Massachusetts Colony. This example, the impressive Large Planchet variety, is also the only of the Pine Tree Shillings to have pellets in the design. With no distracting planchet clips, traces of luster in the recessed areas and strong details for this coin that was crudely prodcued on a rocker press, this is a great, and significant, piece to own!
