Description
This is an 1874-CC SEATED LIBERTY DIME, ARROWS, PCGS EDGE REPAIRED XF DETAIL-ICONIC RARITY! This date is easily the rarest of all the “With Arrows” Dimes. The mintage was a mere 10,817 coins, of which very few were saved by collectors. Because most of the coins went into circulation, Mint State examples are exceedingly rare. What has been called the “Finest Known 1874-CC Dime” is the Buddy Ebsen – Eugene Gardner example that sold in 2014 for $152,750, slightly off from the record $162,150 price the same coin realized in 2003. The Norweb coin, last seen at auction in 1989, may be of comparable condition and it is partially prooflike. Those two examples aside, the number of examples certified higher than XF can be counted on one hand. In all, there are probably no more than 80 examples of the date known in all grades, and at least half of these are either very low grade or have issues that preclude a straight grade. The present example is the latter, evidencing an area between 12:00 and 3:00 on the reverse where the edge was repaired. There are some light scratches at 7:00 on the reverse that go through the wreath, and some small marks in the right obverse field. Justifiably so, neither of these factors were notated. As collectors of the series realize, most 1874-CC Dimes are problematic in one sense or another. It’s been our observation that both grading services have a higher tolerance for this fact when grading this date. Now, for the good: The present coin has a light grey coloration and is neither dark or dingy like so many 1874-CCs. The design elements are XF+ with a sharpness seldom encountered. Were it not for the comment on the holder, this coin would be double our asking price. At the end of the day, how many collectors will ever have the opportunity to fill this impossible hole in their Seated Liberty Dime set? In 37 years in the coin business, this is the first and only 1874-CC Dime that we have ever owned. By all counts, the present coin is a respectable example at a price that makes it approachable for the advanced collector. Once this coin is sold, we don’t expect this opportunity will arise again any time soon! Our commitment is to provide you with quality coins and collectibles at the best possible prices. This piece is no exception. Please note, the coin and collectibles markets do fluctuate, and prices occasionally will change. In this rare circumstance, we will contact you first to verify your order.
